Article Response..

I think that Szilagyi's view should be adopted. As said by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew that Singapore is a more conservative society and it is better for Singapore to keep its social norms. As of today in Singapore, or freedom of speech is quite limited to the extent that words that could cause religious tension would bring imprisonment. However, I am quite pleased with that because it seems effective in the way that little or no racial conflicts occurred in Singapore.
Citing from David's Irving's imprisonment for denying Holocaust and conflicts arising from cartoons that humiliated Muhammad, the root of the problem is clearly freedom of speech. From the rising tension over these issues, we can conclude that people are not yet prepared to accept the idea of freedom of speech. I feel that unless everyone in the world is able to accept any forms of criticism, be it religious or personal, then we could truly exercise freedom of speech. Nonetheless, it is infeasible.

In a multi-racial society like Singapore, we should be grateful that people of different races could live in harmony here. One of the reason, I believed, would be because we learnt from each other's culture, therefore, we are aware of what are the sensitive areas of each ethnic group and know not to overstep the boundaries, harming the delicate trust and respect among us.
According to Singer, freedom of speech is the freedom to say what everyone else believes to be false and even what many people find it offensive. In my opinion, there is only one type of people who could do that without a pang of guilt and would not cause any uproars. That would be the children, toddlers, because they are unaware of the consequences. Adults should understand the vulnerabilities of others and at the least, respect them. This is why we often say "Think before you act.", isn't it? We ought to take into account other people's feelings because we are no longer kids.
In general, I would say freedom of speech, though, as Singer had said, may lead to human progress, it is nevertheless an irresponsible act.

A Hanging..

1. George Orwell uses the techniques of illustration. He drew a picture of the entire process of hanging using his words, protraying the helplessness of the prisoner and the callousness of the spectators, allowing the readers to "see" the stituation and feel as if they were in the shoes of the prisoners. He makes the reader understand the cruelty of capital punishment and feel the same condemnation towards it.

2. Some arguments for capital punishment are that people ought to pay a price for what they have done beacause no one owes them anything. Capital punishment is to dealt with criminals that have committed major crimes. This serves as a deterence to prevent other people from committing heinous sins. Capital punishment also aids in emliminating any threats to the society, country or even the entire world.
Some arguments against capital punishment are that death cannot resolve anything because what is done cannot be undoned. Besides, the act of cruelty makes us no difference from beasts with no humanities. Furthermore, kins of the dead may revenge for them especially when they feel that their deaths are wronged.

3. In my own opinion, I think that capital punishment is essential because of the fact that the society seeks security and safety, hence eradicating human threats to the country and its people is important. Besides, sometimes harshness is inevitable in order to govern the country well. Others may say that hanging the criminal maybe a good way to help him escape from his internal struggles of guilt.
Death penalty can be justified when someone intentionally takes someone else's life.

Self-Introduction..

Hi, I am Wen See from class 22/07 of Anderson JC. Previously from swiss cottage secondary and a pass out member of the Saint John Ambulance Brigade. (SJAB)

I am not as mature as a seventeen year old should be, especially when I am around with my close buddies. I tend to tease friends who are close to me.
A personality test have shown that I am one who follows my mind more than I follows my heart. The time of the day when I am most awake would be when I am bickering with my friends.
I believe that I am quite a cheerful person together with my friends, but I would be drowned in deep thoughts when I do not occupy myself with something.

I once came across a book which wrote that some people are born with dreams, while others have to keep on searching for their dreams and eventually they will succeed.
I have no dreams
or should I say, I have not yet found my dream.
I wish I could quickly decide on a career path and plan for my future.

However, I have many things that I like to do.
I love to watch animes (Japanese cartoons) and read comics/mangas. My favourite animes are Hunter x Hunter , Naruto and Gakuen Alice. The ones who could mesmerise me with their smiles would be Killua, Gaara and Natsume from those animes respectively.
Usually, I would begin to love a particular anime when I found a character that I like extremely in it. Similarly, those without a character that I took interest in, would find themselves being forgotten halfway.
It is my pleasure to have meet several friends who shared the same interest as I do in AJC.
